Around a hundred brown bears live on some seventy hectares of oak forest above Zărnești, nearly all of them taken out of cages at roadside restaurants and petrol stations. Visits are guided and run to a timetable. These 15 almost all pair the sanctuary with Bran, twenty minutes away — compared here on start point, timing and price.

“Had a fantastic day out with Octavian as our guide. The bear sanctuary was fabulous for nature lovers and the castle is a work of art. Octavian is a walking history of both the areas and Romanian in general and definitely made our day so much more interesting. We also had a traditional late lunch in Brasov after a guided walk around admiring the architecture. This is a very long but very worthwhile day out giving you a great insight to Romania. Please be aware there is a lot of walking including stairs and steep hills.”

“The tour was great - the communication with the tour guide was very good, the pick-up was on time and the drive from place to place was smooth. She made the trip easy with bottles of water for us and delivering us to the start with the tickets we bought through the company. Libearty was really moving. It is such a wonderful project and it was lovely to see the bears in their natural habitat getting a second chance after often horrific experiences. You can tell the staff really care about the animals and what they are doing.”
